Genre Conventions

The two main characters are shown at the beggining as a happy married couple. This reflects the behavour throughout the film as they are enemies and want to kill each other. The equilibrium is in the order; they start talking about how fantastic there love life is, disruption happens throught mosrt of the film then the couple make up and its a happy ending. The happy ending is expected from the audience but the but the disruption creates the tension for the audience and makes the plot more interesting. The typical setting of an action film is in this opening ; house and casino. The fight sequences are not expected from the audience as the equilibrium suggests that the genre is romantic, not a hybrid including action. The intorduction of the characters show one side to the protagonists as they are spies for two different agencies and are a married couple. The contrast between the protagonists creates the tention and tention for the audience. The first enigma created in the opening is; 'are the couple in love or do they hate each other?' This is the main enigma as the characters throughout the film show love and hate for each other. Another would be 'would they actually kill each other even though they are married?' The main ideology for this sequence would be make the people you love closer than your job. This indicates the end part of the equilibruim. Straight away the first shot is a medium shot of the two protagonists which indicvates they are in a meeting, also because of the formal costume and location. The meduim shot becomes a medium long shot after a straight cut. The camera is slighhtly hand held to show that the characters are speaking directly to the opposite person or the audience, this creates intimidation for the audience. The titles are shown seperately to the characters on a black screen, where the voices stop talking but the background noises are still playing.
